Breast uplift surgery is also known as a breast lift or medically as mastopexy. It is a cosmetic procedure designed to make your breasts look and feel more perky and firm. A breast lift is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the UK and is performed on women who are generally happy with the size of their boobs, but want to improve the position, feel or shape. This procedure can also be combined with other breast procedures such as breast augmentation, whereby your breasts are enlarged and lifted to a more youthful position.

The aim of breast uplift surgery is to correct drooping or sagging breasts. Over time, breasts can sag / droop with age or due to events in your life such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss. You can also be predisposed to sagging or low hanging breasts due to genetics, whereby your nipples point towards the floor rather than forward facing.

As the ligaments and skin in the breasts stretch, they provide less support to your breast tissue, which can result in your boobs sitting lower on the chest than they once did. This can alter the shape and feel as though your breasts have lost their youthful appearance. A breast lift procedure is performed to reposition the breasts and / or the nipples so that they appear more perky.

Your surgeon will remove some of the skin on your breasts and ensure that the breasts are lifted and symmetrical. Below is a list of some of the reasons why women opt for breast uplift surgery:

• To lift breasts to a more youthful position
• To restore breast shape after pregnancy or breastfeeding
• To improve body contour / silhouette following weight loss

Why Do People Have it?

There are many advantages to breast uplift procedures for those that are an ideal candidate. Lifting the breasts can sometimes help:

• Make boobs / body look more youthful
• Reduce sagging
• Boost self confidence
• Improve overall body appearance
• Regain body confidence after pregnancy
• Make boobs look more symmetrical
• Alter the way your nipples look
• Give confidence to wear different items of clothing, such as swimwear

It is important to be honest with your surgeon during a consultation and discuss every aspect of why you wish to undergo mastopexy in order to receive the best advice possible and to ensure that your goals are realistic.

Who is Suitable?

If you want to change the look of your breasts or are unhappy with the way they hang, you may be a suitable candidate for breast uplift surgery. A suitable candidate for mastopexy is typically:

1. Female over the age of the 18
2. A non smoker or has not smoked for at least 6 weeks
3. Not currently pregnant or breast feeding
4. Fit and healthy at a weight you are comfortable with
5. You may want to opt for breast uplift surgery if:
6. Your nipples point downward towards the floor instead of pointing forward
7. Your nipples hang below the natural breast crease
8. Your breasts are not symmetrical or one hangs lower than the other
9. Your breasts appear flat and sloping rather than round and naturally curved
10. Your nipples sit low on the breast rather than more central

A breast uplift on its own will not increase the size of your breasts. For this reason some women combine mastopexy with augmentation to increase volume and lift the breasts higher.

What to expect:

Consultation:

A consultation with a breast uplift surgeon will last between 15 minutes to one hour. It is your time to discuss the procedure in detail, ask questions and undergo an assessment for surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will be able to advise you on a number of factors as well as discussing whether a breast lift is right for you based on your desired aims and goals.

During a consultation, your surgeon may discuss:

  • Current and past medical conditions
  • What you want to achieve from surgery
  • Why you are considering a breast lift

Your cosmetic surgeon will also examine your breasts, including the size and shape, to ensure that the procedure you want will meet your expectations. It is not uncommon for expectations to change during and after a consultation as many women find that the procedure they are considering does not meet their full expectations.

What are the risks?

Like with any cosmetic procedure, a breast lift comes with associated risks and complications that you should be aware of before agreeing to surgery. These include:

1. Scars
2. Bruising
3. Bleeding
4. Infection
5. Numbness or change in breast sensation
6. Secondary sagging – caused by ageing or changes to your breasts such as weight gain
7. Tissue injury
8. Seroma
9. Undesired results

It is recommended to completely research side effects, risks and complications of mastopexy along with asking your surgeon about how rare / common each associated complication is.
